About Weight Units
Weight (more accurately, mass) is a measure of the amount of matter in an object. Different weight units are used around the world for various purposes, from everyday measurements to scientific applications.
Metric Weight Units
- Kilogram (kg): The base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI). One kilogram is defined by the Planck constant.
- Gram (g): Equal to 1/1000 of a kilogram. Commonly used for measuring food ingredients and small items.
- Milligram (mg): Equal to 1/1000 of a gram. Used in medicine, nutrition, and scientific contexts.
- Metric Ton (t): Equal to 1000 kilograms. Used for measuring large masses like vehicles or shipping cargo.
Imperial and US Weight Units
- Pound (lb): The primary unit of weight in the imperial and US customary systems. Defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms.
- Ounce (oz): Equal to 1/16 of a pound. Used for measuring smaller weights in cooking, postal services, etc.
- Stone (st): Equal to 14 pounds. Commonly used in the UK and Ireland for measuring body weight.
- US Ton (short ton): Equal to 2000 pounds. Used primarily in the United States.
- UK Ton (long ton): Equal to 2240 pounds. Traditionally used in the United Kingdom.
Other Weight Units
- Carat (ct): Equal to 0.2 grams. Used for measuring gemstones and pearls.
- Grain (gr): Equal to 1/7000 of a pound. Used in firearms for measuring bullets and powder.
The kilogram is the only SI base unit that is defined by a physical object rather than a fundamental physical property. In 2019, it was redefined in terms of the Planck constant.
